Molecular Characterization of the Alfalfa mosaic virus Infecting Solanum melongena in Egypt and the Control of Its Deleterious Effects with Melatonin and Salicylic Acid

Abstract: During the spring of 2019, distinct virus-like symptoms were observed in the Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate in Egypt in naturally infected eggplants. Leaves of affected plants showed interveinal leaf chlorosis, net yellow, chlorotic sectors, mottling, blisters, vein enation, necrotic intervention, and narrowing symptoms. The Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) was suspected of to be involved in this disease. Forty plant samples from symptomatic eggplants and 10 leaf samples with no symptoms were collected. The samples were… Show more

“…As the drying time and the temperature increased, which was expected because of the sensitivity of ascorbic acid to heat, similar results were also reported by Hussein et al [58]. The variation in the vitamin C content is in conformity with the studies that show the dehydration process can affect the physiochemical properties of tomato powder [59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. The results of this study are partially in conformity with the findings of Hanif et al [67] who used 5% aloe vera and 20% honey solution and recorded a significant decrease in ascorbic acid (mg100 g -1 ) of tomatoes due to an increase in temperature under different natural and chemical preservatives.…”

“…ROS molecules must be detoxified to reduce injury under stressful conditions. In addition, the efficient destruction of ROS requires the coordination of many antioxidant enzymes (Sofy et al, 2021b). Multiple scavenging enzymes, like CAT, POX, and PPO, reduce the impact of ROS.…”

“…In plants, UV rays decrease the growth characters by reducing the expression of growth-regulating factors and gibberellin levels (Fina et al 2017). In addition, the decreased growth attributes under UV stress could be due to the inhibition in photosynthetic activity, decreased light-harvesting pigments: Chl a, Chl b, and carotenoids contents (Ma et al 2018), and also by enhanced oxidative stress by the accumulation of various types of ROS in tissues (El-Sheshtawy et al 2021;Maksoud et al 2022;Sofy et al 2021b;Waseem et al 2021). Before or after stress, the treatment of Kn whatever ameliorated the UVC-induced disturbances in the tomato seedlings' growth.…”
