Molecular characterization of the first community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains from Central Iran

Abstract: Iranian CA-MRSA strains are genetically diverse with an elevated prevalence of t790/ST22 SCCmec IV isolates. These findings support the need for more effective infection control measures to reduce nasal carriage and prevent dissemination of CA-MRSA in Iran.

“…The increased rate of resistance to methicillin among the isolates obtained in our study could be attributed to the longer period of the study, the sample type, investigated population and different wards of the hospital. The MRSA strains are usually resistant to macrolides, lincosamides, aminoglycoside, and approximately all currently available beta-lactam antimicrobial agents, like penicillin and cephalosporins (21)(22)(23). The susceptibility pattern revealed that vancomycin, teicoplanin, and linezolid had good activity against S. aureus infections, while penicillin and ampicillin had the lowest antibacterial effect on S. aureus isolates.…”

“…Our analysis of 106 MRSA clinical isolates using spa typing revealed 6 different spa types with t030 detected in 66% of the isolates as the most prevalent spa type. Spa type t030 was previously reported in another conducted study done by Japoni-Nejad et al (28) from Iran and is in agreement with findings of Chen et al (29) who suggested that strains with t030 was successfully established as the dominant spa type in hospitals in China. “…Although vancomycin-resistant S. aureus isolates are reported in many parts of the world, the results of susceptibility testing revealed that all isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and inhibited at ≤ 2 µg/mL consistent with other studies in Iran (25) and those of other countries (19,26), which reported that MRSA was almost always susceptible to the mentioned antibiotics. This could be explained by the successful implementation of infection control programs and appropriate use of antibiotics in clinics.…”
