Molecular characterization of the glycoprotein genes of H5N1 influenza A viruses isolated in Israel and the Gaza Strip during 2006 outbreaks

Abstract: Highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza A viruses (AIV) have caused outbreaks among domestic poultry and wild aquatic birds in many Asian, European, and African countries since 1997. In March 2006 an avian H5N1 influenza A virus was isolated from poultry in Israel. In the present study we molecularly characterized the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of eleven H5N1 viruses isolated from domestic poultry in Israel and Gaza in March-April 2006. Phylogenetic analysis of the HA and NA genes showed th… Show more

“…During recent years, the Israeli poultry industry was exposed to three of LPAI-H9N2 and one of HPAI-H5N1 [10,21]. Local H5N1 isolates were practically identical with Egyptian and other H5N1 HPAI viruses that caused Eurasian and African outbreaks in 2005-2006 [21].…”

“…All flocks affected by H5N1 had been vaccinated against H9N2 infection, but evidence of co-infection with H9N2 viruses was observed in the Gaza strip region. As many as one million birds were culled to stop the spread of the H5N1 outbreak (Perk et al, 2007). …”

“…2). Virus A/ chicken/Gaza/833/1-10-27/2006 grouped together with two H5N1 strains isolated in Israel in 2006 and described earlier [12,20]. This virus was isolated in the Gaza Strip in 2006, from chickens infected simultaneously with both AIV subtypes: H9N2 and H5N1.…”
