Molecular characterization of two recombinant isolates of telosma mosaic virus infecting Passiflora edulis from Fujian Province in China

Abstract: Telosma mosaic virus (TeMV) is an important plant virus causing considerable economic losses to passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) production worldwide, including China. In this study, the complete genome sequence (excluding the poly (A) tail) of two TeMV isolates, Fuzhou and Wuyishan, were determined to be 10,050 and 10,057 nucleotides, respectively. Sequence analysis indicated that Fuzhou and Wuyishan isolates share 78–98% nucleotide and 83–99% amino acid sequence identities with two TeMV isolates of Hanoi an… Show more

“…3, derived from an excellent single line of yellow fruits, has a yellow peel, higher sugar content and stronger disease resistance, but a milder flavour. The production scale of passion fruit in China has continued to expand, but viral diseases, stem rot, scab disease and brown spot, as well as high proportions of small and malformed fruits under continuous cropping strikingly reduce the yield and quality [ 2 , 3 ]. With the increase of the market demand for passion fruit, continuous cropping has become a common practice, which usually leads to an obstacle in reducing plant growth and decreasing yield and quality by pests and diseases outbreak [ 4 ].…”

“…Among them, viral disease is a very serious disease of passion fruit, which is the limiting factor of the yield and quality of passion fruit . Passion fruit virus diseases are generally associated with East Asian passiflora virus (EAPV), passion fruit woodiness virus (PWV), telosma mosaic virus (TeMV), , and cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV) …”

“…Telosma mosaic virus (TeMV), a potyvirus , was initially discovered in a Vietnamese violet and later found to infect passion fruit in Thailand, , Haikou, Fujian, and Guizhou of China. , The virus is highly infectious to passion fruit, mainly endangering the leaves and flowers of passion fruit, manifesting mosaic and shrinkage. The disease caused a severe decline in passion fruit production and decreased fruit quality.…”
