Molecular Detection of Bartonella Species in Ticks From Peru

Abstract: A total of 103 ticks, collected from canines, horses, donkeys, and snakes from Peru, were screened for the presence of Bartonella DNA by polymerase chain reaction analysis. Bartonella DNA was detected in two ticks using Bartonella 16S-23S intergenic spacer region primers and in an additional two ticks using Bartonella NADH dehydrogenase gamma subunit gene (nuoG) primers. Bartonella rochalimae Eremeeva et al., B. quintana Schmincke, and B. elizabethae Daly et al. DNA was detected in a Rhipicephalus sanguineus L… Show more

“…The human flea is an aggressive and promiscuous ectoparasite found on a wide range of hosts, including domestic dogs [48], [49]. In addition, B. rochalimae was also recently detected in a brown dog tick ( Rhipicephalus sanguineus ) from a dog in the province of Callao [45], located only 25 km (15.5 miles) northwest of San Juan de Miraflores, the site where the largest number of dogs infected with B. rochalimae was detected in our study. Both Callao and San Juan de Miraflores are suburbs of the country's capital (Lima), where human and canine population densities and social and economic conditions may favor the multiplication and dissemination of vectors, increasing the risk of human infection.…”

“…Infections with B. rochalimae or B. v. berkhoffii have never been described in humans or animals from Peru, even though other known and unknown species of Bartonella have been described from small mammals, bats, body lice, fleas and ticks from Peru [22], [42][45]. In our study, we documented 10.3% of dogs infected with B. rochalimae and 7.7% of dogs infected with B. v. berkhoffii from Caraz and Huaraz.…”

“…While reviewing recently published literature relative to potential transmission of Bartonella species by ticks [20-24], the mother, a 58-year-old anesthesiologist from the Netherlands contacted one of the investigators in our laboratory (EBB) by email and requested BAPGM enrichment blood culture testing to determine if she and her son could have been infected with a Bartonella sp. following tick bites.…”

“…En el Perú se ha investigado si existen otros artrópodos vectores de Bartonella bacilliformis, pero hasta el momento parece ser que solo los flebotomíneos del género Lutzomyia son los únicos que transmiten la enfermedad de Carrión (75) .…”
