Molecular diagnosis of Ehrlichia canis infection in dogs with uveitis

Abstract: Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) is an infectious disease caused by a gram-negative bacterium Ehrlichia canis that has a high global prevalence that leads to high rates of morbidity and mortality in dogs. Among the clinical changes, ophthalmic diseases can lead to permanent blindness and it can be an important clinical sign. The objective of this study was to perform nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to diagnose E. canis infection in dogs with bilateral uveitis from the Veterinary Hospital of the Santa… Show more

“…A úvea é uma das principais estruturas do olho afetadas por doenças oculares e sistêmicas, como as hemoparasitoses, devido ao seu alto fluxo sanguíneo, sensibilidade imunológica e proximidade com outras estruturas do olho (VELOSO et al, 2018). Os sinais clínicos podem variar de acordo com a porção do trato uveal acometida e suas complicações (RIBEIRO; SCHRODER, 2015; HENDRIX, 2021).…”

“…CME is a multisystemic disease characterized by nonspecific clinical signs (Harrus & Waner, 2011), which may overlap or vary depending on the disease stage. The most common clinical manifestations in both the acute and chronic phases include high fever, depression, lethargy, anorexia, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, bleeding, pale mucous membranes, ocular and neurological alterations (Aroch et al, 2018;Mylonakis et al, 2004;Parashar et al, 2016;Rungsipipat et al, 2009;Veloso et al, 2018). In the subclinical phase, dogs are asymptomatic but can be persistent carriers of the pathogen for years (Harrus et al, 1998;Nelson & Couto, 2015;Waner et al, 1997).…”
