Molecular Engineering of Supramolecular Scaffold Coatings that Can Reduce Static Platelet Adhesion

Abstract: Novel supramolecular coatings that make use of low molecular weight ditopic monomers with guanine end groups are studied using fluid tapping AFM. These molecules assemble on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) from aqueous solutions to form nano-sized banding structures whose sizes can be systematically tuned at the nano-scale by tailoring the molecular structure of the monomers. The nature of the self-assembly in these systems has been studied through a combination of the self-assembly of structural der… Show more

“…[31][32][33] The formation mechanism of such assemblies, particularly in aqueous environments, involves adsorption followed by the rearrangement of the molecules on the surface into hierarchical assemblies. [34,35] Thus, the tendency to form the nanoring structures by these carbon nanotubes after end-to-end functionalization with the uracil nucleobase, probably involves the adsorption of SWCNTs on the HOPG surface. Since the pyrimidine bases are known to feature poor adsorption energies on graphite, [36] this organization is further stabilized through uracil-uracil self base-pairing involving N3ÀH and C4=O.…”

“…We have recently been interested in the assembly of a range of more complex guanine derivatives deposited onto highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) from aqueous solutions. We reported10 that homoditopic guanine end-capped n -alkanes (e.g. 4 ) deposited from water:DMSO solutions form molecular-sized epitaxially ordered bands on HOPG.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] A guiding principle in this rapidly growing area is the ability of nanoparticles to mimic the high affinity and multivalent interactions that exist in cellular systems offering the potential for highly efficient synthetic diagnostic and therapeutic systems. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] One clear advantage of nanomaterials lies in their potential to be used as noninvasive diagnostic tools with the capacity to combine multiple modalities on one probe and the longer term opportunities for simultaneous application as drug-delivery systems. Therefore, the development of a new generation of nano-sized theranostics is a very appealing goal for contemporary polymer scientists.…”
