Molecular epidemiology of cytomegalovirus infection in kindergarten children

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the source of cytomegalovirus (CMV) excretion in children who had persistent viruria. A total of 287 children, ages 3-5 years, enrolled in two kindergartens were followed for 9 months, and 28.8% of 139 CMV-infected children were found to have shed virus persistently in urine for > or = 3 months. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method provided direct evidence to demonstrate differences in CMV strains shed by 32 persistent shedders selected at random. The glycoprotei… Show more

“…However, recent evidence has demonstrated that mucosal shedding of HCMV occurs commonly in many healthy individuals (do Canto et al, 2000;Lucht et al, 1998;Shen et al, 1996) and very frequently in immunocompromised patients (Diamond et al, 2000;Fidouh-Houhou et al, 2001;Lucht et al, 1998;Mostad et al, 2000). In this study, RhCMV shedding was detected consistently in many animals, indicating low-level, persistent infection.…”

“…HCV which explains the higher prevalence of CMV DNA in controls than spontaneously cleared HCV patients. In earlier studies on dual viral infections (HBV/CMV and HCV/CMV) [6,23] it was demonstrated that CMV was detected in HBV or HCV patients mostly as a dual infection and that it can aggravate the course of the disease. Recently, Bader El din et al, [14] reported higher rate of CMV co-infection in chronic HCV Egyptian patients than those reported in other patient populations.…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that CMV infection increases in frequency in children attending day-care centers 14 , especially in those for mentally retarded children 20 . The high prevalence of CMV shedding in the urine or saliva by these children, ranging from 39 to 46% in the three virological evaluations performed during the present study, suggests that these secretions are important sources of the virus.…”
