Molecular Epidemiology of Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Isolated in Shandong, China

Abstract: Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging nosocomial pathogen prevalent in hospitals worldwide. In order to understand the molecular epidemiology of multi-drug resistant (MDR) A. baumannii, we investigated the genotypes of A. baumannii isolated from 10 hospitals in Shandong, China, from August 2013 to December 2013, by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Antimicrobial resistance genes were analyzed by PCR and DNA sequencing. By PFGE analysis, we discovered 11 PFGE types … Show more

“…Carbapenem resistance in A.baumannii has been reported in various studies, ranging from 40-98.7% (5, [21][22][23][24]. We found 86.9% carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii which is similar to 85% resistance reported by Rynga D et al (2015) from Delhi (25).…”

“…BSIs caused by A. baumannii strains mostly occurred in ICUs rather than on GWs [ 32 ]. The likely reason is that the A. baumannii BSIs originated predominantly from pulmonary infections associated with ventilators.…”

“…Despite extensive research on the epidemiology and population evolution of A. baumannii worldwide, the understanding of the evolutionary processes driving A. baumannii multidrug resistance and genome diversity in China remains incomplete, especially in the central and western regions of the country. Only in the eastern and coastal areas has a comprehensive genetic study of A. baumannii collected at different sites and at multiple times been conducted 10…”
