Molecular Epidemiology of Porcine Circovirus Type 3 Infection in Swine Herds in China

Abstract: Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) is a new-emerging circovirus belonging to the genus Circovirus in the family Circoviridae in which PCV type 1 (PCV1) and PCV type 2 (PCV2) were well documented (Palinski et al. 2017). PCV1 is a cell culture-derived virus and is considered to be nonpathogenic for swine, whereas PCV2 is the primary etiological agent of porcine circovirus-associated diseases (PCVAD) that causes severe economic losses in the swine industry worldwide (Zhai et al. 2014). PCV3 was firstly reported in … Show more

“…(2018) and Li et al . (2018), that PCV3 mainly infect lungs and lymphoid tissues such as lymph nodes and tonsil [ 34 , 35 , 38 ]. PCV2 is known to have tropism for lymphoid tissues in pigs, with lymphoid depletion and histiocytic replacement of lymphoid tissues being hallmark lesions of PCV2 infection [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…The genetic and traceability analyses of PCV3 epidemic strains are of great significance for preventing and controlling this infectious disease (17,18,22). In this study, the nucleotide sequences of the cap gene from nine strains of PCV3 in Xinjiang shared high identities with other strains from China and abroad.…”

“…Due to the widespread use of commercial vaccines in Chinese pig herds, PCV2 infection has been controlled to some extent (31). However, since PCV3 was first discovered in 2016, PCV3 infection has occurred on pig farms in more than 10 provinces including Jiangxi, Hubei, Henan, Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, and Jiangsu, causing great damage to the Chinese pig industry (3,16,18,19,24,27). Some studies showed that PCV3 infection was associated with abortion, respiratory failure, and diarrhoea in weaned piglets (10,31); however, the pathogenesis of PCV3 was still unclear (5,13).…”
