SummaryWe report a molecular epidemiological study of rabies virus strains circulating in animal populations in Bhutan, and investigate potential origins of these viruses. Twenty-three rabies virus isolates originating from dogs and other domestic animals were characterized by sequencing the partial nucleoprotein (N) gene (395 bp). Phylogenetic analysis was conducted and the Bhutanese isolates were compared with rabies viruses originating from other parts of the world. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Bhutanese isolates were highly similar and were closely related to Indian strains and South Asian Arctic-like-1 viruses. Our study suggests that the rabies viruses spreading in southern parts of Bhutan have originated from a common ancestor, perhaps from the Indian virus strain.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is distributed from southeastern Siberia to northern Vietnam, including Korea and Japan, as well as Europe. In Korea, most of its predators and competitors are extinct, which has resulted in rapid growth of the raccoon dog population. This population increase has raised concerns about its role in the ecosystem and the zoonotic transfer of various contagious diseases, and thus an effective method of raccoon dog population control in Korea is required. To investigate the genetic diversity and structure of raccoon dog populations, 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified and characterized. These novel microsatellite markers were employed to obtain basic population genetic parameters for 104 N. procyonoides specimens from five locations in South Korea. The mean allele number of 12 loci across samples was 8.7, and the number of alleles per locus ranged 2-13. Mean expected and observed heterozygosities were 0.723 and 0.619, respectively. Genetic differentiation, estimated by pairwise F ST , was significant for all population pairs excepting Seoul/Gyeonggi and Gangwon pair, with a moderate level of genetic differentiation for all the population pairs (mean F ST = 0.054), but little differentiation between Seoul/Gyeonggi and Gangwon (F ST = 0.024). Bayesian-based clustering analysis predicted that Korean raccoon dog population is composed of four distinct genetic subpopulations. These genetic information and structure of raccoon dog will be very useful to prevent spreading infectious diseases.

Approximately 60% of all human pathogens and 75% of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic (of animal origin). Camel zoonotic diseases can be encountered in all camel‐rearing countries. In this article, all studies carried out on camel zoonotic diseases in Iran are reviewed to show the importance of camels for public health in this country. More than 900 published documents were systematically searched to find relevant studies from 1,890 until late 2018. The collected articles were classified according to the aetiological agents. In this study, 19 important zoonotic diseases were reported among Iranian camels including listeriosis, leptospirosis, plague, Q fever, brucellosis, campylobacteriosis, tuberculosis, pasteurellosis, clostridiosis, salmonellosis, Escherichia coli infections, rabies, camelpox, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, Crimean‐Congo haemorrhagic fever, echinococcosis, cryptosporidiosis, toxoplasmosis and dermatophytosis, most of which belong to bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal pathogens, respectively. Results show that camels are one of the most important sources of infections and diseases in human; therefore, continuous monitoring and inspection programs are necessary to prevent the outbreak of zoonotic diseases caused by this animal in humans.
