Molecular Identification of Endophytic Fungi from Bark of Raru (Cotylelobium melanoxylon) that Produce the Antibacterial Compounds

Abstract: The Dipterocarpaceae plant, raru (Cotylelobium melanoxylon) is widespread in Southeast Asia. The bark of raru has been used by local communities in North Sumatera as antidiarrheal drugs due to its antibacterial compounds. The antibacterial activity of the raru's bark is induced by endophytic fungi that live in the region of the bark. This study aimed to identify the endophytic fungi-producer of antibacterial compounds in the bark of raru (C. melanoxylon) by means of molecular analysis. In general, endophytic f… Show more

“…Endophytes were recovered from the leaves and stems of Medicago sativa, Glycine max, Sesbania grandiflora, Centrocema basilianum, Camellia sinensis, Asclepias sinensis, Cotylelobium melanoxylon, Canavalia cathartica and mangrove plants. The fungal morphotypes from previous reports were classified into Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Deuteromycota [7,12,[19][20][21][22][23]. According to [24], more endophytic fungi are isolated from leaves than from stems.…”

“…The plant species of P. methysticum are known to contain a fairly high metabolite (Tanjung et al, 2014), but AMF can be well-associated (Chandra et al, 2014). In fact, besides AMF, various plant species are also able to associate with endophytes (Cape et al, 2014;Hasanah et al, 2017).…”

“…The bark of C. melanoxylon contains ampelopsin F., isoampelopsin F., ε-viniferin, vaticanol A, E, G, lyoniresinol (Matsuda et al 2009). The bark also contains flavonoids as antidiabetic, tannins and saponins compounds (Pasaribu et al 2007) which are useful as an antimicrobial (bacteria and viruses) and potential endophytic fungi as a source for medicine (Hasanah et al 2017). C. melanoxylon's leaves are also used to treat wounds by the local people.…”
