In Algeria, several research studies point to the importance of the causative agents of fusarium head blight. Indeed, our research aims to study the phenotyping of the resistance of some durum wheat genotypes for their behavior to fusarium head blight, caused by four isolates of Fusarium culmorum (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wm.G.Sm.&action=edit&redlink=1">Wm.G.Sm.</a>) <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacc.">Sacc.</a>. For this purpose, the disease assessment is carried out in the field. The different evaluation criteria are: incubation period, measurement of the mass of a thousand grains and AUDPC (Area Under the Disease Progression Curve). The results obtained revealed that the varieties and lines resulting from crosses had a quite different level of susceptibility with regard to the four isolates studied and no genotype showed complete resistance (immunity) under our growing conditions. Among the tested material, the lines showed higher resistance than their parents. The reasons for this phenomenon is that crosses between genotypes implicated cultivars from Europe and Western Asia (Syria), where wheat domestication has occurred very early (between 12 000 and 10 000 years BP), which may be promising sources of resistance to fusarium head blight. The results also show a slight variability in behavior, also linked to the aggressiveness of the Fusarium species studied in this work.

“…Fusarium crown rot (FCR), which is a soil-borne disease caused by various Fusarium species, is one of the most significant wheat diseases in many countries ( Kazan and Gardiner, 2018 ), The incidence of FCR disease showed a rapid increase year by year, particularly under the adoption of wheat-maize crop rotation and straw return cropping patterns. Fusarium crown rot (FCR) caused by Fusarium pseudograminearum is a serious threat to wheat production worldwide. This study aimed to assess the effects of Talaromyces muroii strain TM28 isolated from root of Panax quinquefolius against F. pseudograminearum. The strain of TM28 inhibited mycelial growth of F. pseudograminearum by 87.8% at 72 h, its cell free fermentation filtrate had a strong antagonistic effect on mycelial growth and conidial germination of F. pseudograminearum by destroying the integrity of the cell membrane. In the greenhouse, TM28 significantly increased wheat fresh weight and height in the presence of pathogen Fp, it enhanced the antioxidant defense activity and ameliorated the negative effects of F. pseudograminearum, including disease severity and pathogen abundance in the rhizosphere soil, root and stem base of wheat. RNA-seq of F. pseudograminearum under TM28 antagonistic revealed 2,823 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Most DEGs related to cell wall and cell membrane synthesis were significantly downregulated, the culture filtrate of TM28 affected the pathways of fatty acid synthesis, steroid synthesis, glycolysis, and the citrate acid cycle. T. muroii TM28 appears to have significant potential in controlling wheat Fusarium crown rot caused by F. pseudograminearum.

The fungal genus Fusarium contains many important plant pathogens as well as endophytes of wild and crop plants. Globally, Fusarium toxins in food crops are considered one of the greatest food safety concerns. Their occurrence has become more pronounced in Africa in recent times. Among the major Fusarium mycotoxins with food and feed safety concerns, zearalenone is frequently detected in finished feeds and cereals in Africa. However, the impact of indigenous agricultural practices (pre‐ and postharvest factors) and food processing techniques on the prevalence rate of Fusarium species and zearalenone occurrence in food and feed have not been collated and documented systematically. This review studies and analyzes recent reports on zearalenone contamination in maize and other cereal products from Africa, including its fungi producers, agronomic and climate variables impacting their occurrences, preventive measures, removal/decontamination methods, and legislations regulating their limits. Reports from relevant studies demonstrated a high prevalence of F. verticillioides and F. graminearum as Africa's main producers of zearalenone. Elevated CO2 concentration and high precipitation may carry along an increased risk of zearalenone contamination in maize. African indigenous processing methods may contribute to reduced ZEA levels in agricultural products and foods. Most African countries do not know their zearalenone status in the food supply chain and they have limited regulations that control its occurrence.
