Molecular orientation of lead phthalocyanine on (100) oriented single crystal diamond surfaces

Abstract: Lead phthalocyanine (PbPc) thin films of 5 and 50 nm have been deposited on hydrogen and oxygen terminated single crystal diamond (SCD) using organic molecular beam deposition. Atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed that PbPc grown on the hydrogen terminated SCD forms layers with a high degree of crystallinity, dominated by the monoclinic (320) orientation parallel to the diamond surface. The oxygen terminated diamond led to a randomly oriented PbPc film. Absorption and photocurrent… Show more

“…The high similarity of the two phases gives rise to similar absorption features, with the most intense Q-band located between 500 -750 nm 21,27 . On the contrary, non-planar Pc materials, including PbPc, ClAlPc, TiOPc, VOPc and ClInPc, exhibit vastly different polymorphs, which are assigned as monoclinic phase and triclinic phase [28][29][30] . Monoclinic form consists of molecules stacking in a face-to-face fashion, giving rise to metal ions in a linear chain 28,31 .…”

“…The molecular orientation of both planar and nonplanar MPc molecules on oxide substrates such as SiO 2 is well known. The molecules were shown to preferably have an edge-on orientation [3,7,9,[27][28][29]. In our earlier studies, we have reproducibly obtained different crystallites of PbPc on substrates such as HOPG, Au(111), Si and SiO 2 .…”

“…Additionally, a number of these carbon-based nanomaterials have intrinsic properties that can be harnessed in imaging applications ( 19 21 ). Detonation nanodiamonds (DND) and fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs), in particular, have piqued interest in the biomedical community because of their several favorable properties ( 22 35 ). For example, NDs have unique faceted surfaces, and their importance in biological and medical applications was initially elucidated on the basis of the seminal work by Barnard and colleagues ( 22 , 36 39 ).…”
