One of these clades was circumscribed as the re-established genus Pityrocarpa that lacks either prickles or spines and has fruits dehiscing along just one suture (Jobson & Luckow, 2007), narrowing the concept of Piptadenia to species that are armed with prickles or stipular spines and fruits dehiscing along both sutures.…”

“…Phylogenetic analyses of plastid data (trnL intron, matK/trnK) supported P. viridiflora as sister to Anadenanthera or unresolved regarding other genera of the Piptadenia group (Jobson & Luckow, 2007). More recently, combined analyses of plastid (matK/trnK, trnD-trnT, trnL-trnF) and nuclear (nr-ITS/5.8S) data resolved P. viridiflora as sister to a larger clade comprising the genera Microlobius, Parapiptadenia, Pityrocarpa, Pseudopiptadenia and Stryphnodendron rather than to the species of Piptadenia s.str., which formed a clade previously referred to as the Eupiptadenia clade by Jobson & Luckow (2007) (Simon & al., 2016). Thus, while there is strong evidence to suggest that P. viridiflora forms a lineage distinct from Piptadenia s.str., previous phylogenetic analyses suffer from missing data and lack of support across parts of the phylogeny, suggesting the need for a more comprehensively sampled phylogenetic framework.…”
