Molecular Prognostic Profile of Egyptian HCC Cases Infected with Hepatitis C Virus

Abstract: Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common and aggressive malignancy. Despite of the improvements in its treatment, HCC prognosis remains poor due to its recurrence after resection. This study provides complete genetic profile for Egyptian HCC. Genome-wide analyses were performed to identify the predictive signatures. Patients and Methods: Liver tissue was collected from 31 patients with diagnosis of HCC and gene expression levels in the tumours and their adjacent non-neoplastic tissues samples wer… Show more

“…This was in agreement with the results of El-Serag[2], Zidan et al[23] and Zekri et al[24] and reflects the close relationship between HCV and HCC. The prevalence of HCV infection in Egypt is high and its percentage in patients who develop HCC is higher than that in patients in other countries[25,26].…”

“…Increased expression of CYP7A1 has been previously determined using quantitative RT‐PCR in patients with HCC (50). Similarly, the increased expression of ELOVL2 has been detected by RT‐PCR in the liver tissue of 31 patients with HCC (51). The ELOVL2 gene has a role in oxidative stress induction and lipid biosynthesis through elongation of long‐chain fatty acids.…”

“…In Egypt, which has a very high incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, most malignant neoplasms of the liver arise on top of chronically damaged livers, typically a cirrhotic liver [1]. …”
