Molecular Staging of Malignant Melanoma

Abstract: Context.-For most solid tumors, the metastatic status of regional lymph nodes is the strongest predictor of relapse and survival. However, routine pathological examination of lymph nodes may underestimate the number of patients with melanoma who have nodal metastases.Objective.-To determine the clinical significance of a highly sensitive molecular assay for occult nodal metastases for the staging of patients with melanoma.Design.-A prospective cohort study of consecutive patients in which lymphatic mapping and… Show more

“…[13] Studies of the detection of submicroscopic levels of disease in lymph nodes are currently underway. [2021] Similarly, in our study, patients with lymph node involvement had higher LRR (55.8%) and distant metastasis (60.5%).…”

“…T he sentinel node status is the single most important prognostic factor in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma, [1][2][3][4][5] and is an integral part of the new American Joint Committee on Cancers (AJCC) staging system. 6 The technique was initially described by Morton et al in 1992, 7 and has since been modified by incorporating lymphoscintigraphy with intradermal injection of vital blue dye.…”

“…The value of SLN biopsy as a staging procedure has been reinforced by two further studies which used molecular methods of detecting melanoma in addition to conventional histology. In a study of 114 patients by Shivers et al 7 . the relapse rate over 28 months was 67% in those who were node‐positive histologically, but only 2% in patients who were negative by both histology and RT–PCR.…”
