RESUMEN Se describen dos nuevas especies del género ABSTRACTWe describe two new species of the genus Pyrgulopsis Call and Pilsbry from subfossil spring deposits of Viesca, Coahuila, in the northern part of Mexico. The first species, P. paleominckleyi sp. nov., has trochiform shells with flat whorls and bulbous shoulders. Extant endemic species Pyrgulopsis minckleyi (Taylor) displayssimilar shell features -this species was originally described as Nymphophilus minckleyi Taylor from the spring complex of the Cuatrociénegas valley, Coahuila. Some specimens of P. paleominckleyi sp. nov. show wing-like shoulders that have never been observed among fossil or extant members of the genus. In addition, shells of the second new species from Viesca, P. paleoacarinatus are similar to P. acarinatus, which is other endemic Pyrgulopsis species from Cuatrociéne-gas. We suppose that both sub-fossil springsnails of Viesca are sister species or, likely, direct precursors of the two extant endemic springsnails from Cuatrociénegas valley.

Pyrgulopsis gilae is a small springsnail that is narrowly distributed along the forks of the upper Gila River and currently being managed as a threatened and sensitive species by the State of New Mexico and United States Forest Service, respectively. A previous phylogeographic study of this species based on mitochondrial COI sequences delineated substantial divergence between several populations along the lower and upper reaches of the East Fork Gila River. The present study surveyed COI variation among a larger number of populations across the entire geographic range of P. gilae. Three haplotype groupings were delineated that were congruently resolved as clades by a Bayesian analysis. One of the clades was composed of populations along the lower East Fork and mainstem Gila River and corresponds to P. gilae as originally circumscribed. The other two clades were composed of populations along the Middle Fork and upper East Fork Gila River that were recently referred to P. gilae. These three geographically isolated clades do not share any haplotypes, have significant F ST values, and are differentiated from each other by 3.9-6.3 % sequence divergence. Based on this evidence we suggest that the clades represent distinct species and should be managed as separate conservation units pending taxonomic revision of P. gilae. This study provides additional evidence that geographically disjunct subunits of Pyrgulopsis species often represent distinct monophyletic lineages that may warrant formal taxonomic recognition, and thus underscores the importance of finescale conservation genetics studies of these imperiled organisms.

We provide the first genetic analysis of the Bruneau Hot Springsnail (Pyrgulopsis bruneauensis), a federally listed (endangered) hydrobiid gastropod that is distributed in spring-fed habitats along a short reach of the Bruneau River in southwestern Idaho and threatened with extinction by groundwater withdrawal. Partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit I (NDI) were obtained from 51 specimens from six sites spanning the narrow geographic range of P. bruneauensis. A Bayesian analysis of the combined dataset resolved this species as a well supported clade which differed from other regional congeners by 4.66-10.62% sequence divergence (COI). The 11 observed COI haplotypes in P. bruneauensis formed two divergent (1.42 ± 0.7%) subgroups that co-occurred at five of the six collecting sites. COI haplotype diversity was substantial (ranging up to 0.9111) in all but one sample, while nucleotide diversity was low (\0.01). AMOVA detected small but significant variation among sites, although only one sample was significantly differentiated by pairwise comparisons. Haplotype composition varied widely among the collecting localities and no obvious geographic pattern was detected. These findings suggest that translocation of snails, which was considered as a possible measure in the P. bruneauensis recovery plan, should be preceded by assays to ensure selection of appropriately genetically diverse source populations.
