“…19 Genetic identification of rodent, Rickettsia, and Bartonella species/strains. For each rat, DNA was extracted from a mixture of the four organ biopsies to 1) confirm the host species identity using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequencing using L7 and H6 primers 29 ; obtained sequences were compared with known sequences of the Africanrodentia database (http://projects.biodiversity.be/africanrodentia/), 2) detect the presence and estimate the prevalence and strain identity of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp.…”

“…In case DNA was degraded, we used two internal primers (L1Mni 5 0 -ACC TCT TCT CGC TCC GGG CCC ATC A-3 0 ; this study from weasel ctr alignment and E3 (Arnason et al, 1997) to amplify ctr in two overlapping fragments of 306 and 363 nucleotides. The mitochondrial DNA cytb gene was amplified entirely using L7 and H6 primers (Montgelard et al, 2002) or in two overlapping fragments (767 and 742 bp) with the internal primers H2 and L2 (Hassanin et al, 1998). All weasels have been sequenced for the ctr (65 from this study and 23 from an earlier study by Lebarbenchon et al, 2006).…”

“…The complete mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) gene was amplified via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the use of modified universal primers L7 (5ʹ-ACTAATGACATGAAAAATCATCGTT-3ʹ) and H6 (5ʹ-TCTTCATTTTTGGTTTACAAGAC-3ʹ) (Montgelard et al 2002). The PCR protocol for tissue samples is described in Norris et al (2008).…”
