Molluscicidal activities of six species of Bignoniaceae from north–eastern Brazil, as measured againstBiomphalaria glabrataunder laboratory conditions

Abstract: The molluscicidal profile and brine-shrimp bio-activity of the ethanolic extracts of plants from the Bignoniaceae family were determined. The six extracts investigated were of the stems of Melloa quadrivalvis and Tabebuia aurea, and whole plants of Adenocalymma comosum, Arrabidaea parviflora, Cuspidaria argentea and Clytostoma binatum. When tested in the laboratory, with Biomphalaria glabrata as the test snail, all six extracts gave median lethal concentrations (9-54 microg/ml) that fell well below the upper t… Show more

“…The final volume was 5 mL with mollusks exposed through dermal contact directly with the extract [ 12 ]. Silva and collaborators [ 13 ] used plastic terrariums with capacity of 250 mL containing 5 adult mollusks exposed to a final volume of 8 mL sprayed with manual sprayer.…”

“…There are papers using Becker with a maximal volume of 250 mL containing 10 mollusks for treatment [ 13 , 16 , 17 ], 500 mL with 10 mollusks [ 8 , 18 , 19 ], 1000 mL with 10 mollusks [ 20 , 21 ], and in rare cases 2000 mL [ 22 ]. However, these papers, changing the final volume and number of mollusks, did not validate mathematically the efficiency of these protocols to measure molluscicidal activity in comparison to standard protocol.…”

“…Those chemical constituents provide its extracts with tensoactive properties, having been widely used not only as a source of soap but also for the application of its biological effects in medicine as well as in pest control. Indeed, the tensoactivity has been a property that has found application in pest control as shown by the fact that soaps are probably among the oldest insecticides in use (Silva et al 2007). …”

“…O extrato etanólico de suas hastes evidenciou atividade moluscicida contra Biomphalaria glabrata com concentrações letais médias (9-54 µg ml -1 ) bem abaixo do limite superior de 100 µg ml -1 , estabelecido pela Organização Mundial de Saúde (Silva et al, 2007).…”
