Moment-by-Moment in Women's Recovery: Randomized controlled trial protocol to test the efficacy of a mindfulness-based intervention on treatment retention and relapse prevention among women in residential treatment for substance use disorder

Abstract: Although therapeutic treatments exist for substance use disorder (SUD), about half of individuals who enter treatment leave early and relapse to substance use. Early dropout from residential treatment places individuals at risk of relapse, and women in SUD residential treatment represent a vulnerable population. Evidence gaps persist for the use of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) among racially and ethnically diverse women with SUDs, especially regarding the efficacy of MBIs adapted to prevent residenti… Show more

“…Data utilized in this paper were from baseline interviews conducted as part of a randomized controlled trial conducted between 2016 and 2018 (for parent study details, see [ 40 ]). In the current study, we did not focus on intervention effects; therefore, we controlled for group assignment in the analysis.…”

“…Guided by prior empirical research, the primary purpose of this study is to examine differences in women’s residential SUD treatment retention (as measured by number of days in treatment) by referral status (CJ, CPS, and nonmandated). To address these limitations in research, this study used data from women admitted to a residential SUD treatment program who took part in a larger randomized clinical trial [ 39 , 40 ]. The goal of this study is to generate important insights for understanding retention differences among women entering residential SUD treatment via three primary treatment entry pathways.…”

“…Moment-by-Moment in Women’s Recovery (MMWR) was developed as an adaptation of MBSR, specifically designed for low income, racially, and ethnically diverse women currently enrolled in residential SUD treatment [ 28 ]. MMWR is intended to be administered in a residential setting, a feature that distinguishes it from other MBIs [ 28 ].…”

“…FMRI data were acquired during the baseline period (pre-randomization) from a subset of patients participating in a clinical trial of Moment-by-Moment in Women's Recovery (MMWR). MMWR is a trauma-informed, mindfulness-based adjunct intervention for low-income, ethnically and racially diverse women in residential treatment for SUDs (Amaro and Black, 2017). If interoception is indeed a critical factor in SUD and SUD treatment response, and if interoception is compromised among those with comorbid PTSD, then characterizing that compromise is an important step towards developing tailored treatment approaches for this subgroup.…”
