Abstract: BACKGROUND: Hyperinsulinism (HI) is the most common cause of persistent hypoglycemia in neonates, infants and children. Persistent hypoglycemia due to HI in the neonatal period and infancy has detrimental effects on the developing brain, leading to permanent brain damage.
