Mongolian salt lakes: some features of their geography, thermal patterns, chemistry and biology

Abstract: There are > 3500 lakes of area > 0.1 km2 in Mongolia. Most have salinities > 1 g l-'. Of these saline lakes, 12 have areas > 50 km2 each, 10, areas > 100 km2, and 2, areas r 1000 km2. Limnological investigations of salt lakes include morphometric studies, and investigations of bottom sediments, thermal regimes, chemical features, and biological (including fish) characteristics. Data from these investigations now provide a much clearer picture of the limnology of saline lakes in central Asia.

“…According to [Egorov, 1993;Williams, 1991], there are almost 5,000 lakes in Eastern Mongolia [19,20]. Most of these lakes are located in the northeastern part of Mongolia and included in the Eastern-Mongolian System of small lakes, which is the largest lake system among those reviewed above.…”

“…Lakes of the eastern regions of Mongolia have not been well studied yet. Only the largest lakes located in the western regions of Mongolia are described in a few publications [19,20], but even these main lakes have not been subject to any detailed geochemical research yet. In view of the above, it appears timely and reasonable to publish results of the studies conducted from 2004 to 2009.…”

“…Basically, these are middle-aged people who are not alien to active physical rest. In addition, the reorientation of resorts to a new market segment is associated with a reduction in financial support from municipalities and the state (Erdavletov, 2010;Egorov, 1993;Datta, 2020). It should also be said that in the domestic tourist practice the concept of "medical tourism" has received recognition only in recent years in connection with the introduction of a number of new treatment programs and foreign standards in the practice of resort business (Herman et al, 2019).…”
