Monitoring Human Visual Behavior during the Observation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Videos

Abstract: The present article describes an experimental study towards the examination of human visual behavior during the observation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) videos. Experimental performance is based on the collection and the quantitative & qualitative analysis of eye tracking data. The results highlight that UAV flight altitude serves as a dominant specification that affects the visual attention process, while the presence of sky in the video background seems to be the less affecting factor in this proce… Show more

“…Indeed, eye movements of human beings or any substitute, collected during stimuli visualization, establish the Ground Truth (GT) essential to assess the validity of predicted saliency maps. EyeTrackUAV dataset [23] is the only UAV salience dataset available, to the best of our knowledge. It includes 19 different videos extracted from the UAV123 database [29].…”

“…Criteria for content selection were the diversity of environment, distance and angle to the scene, size of the principal object and presence of sky. Authors of [23] collected highly precise binocular gaze data (1000 Hz) from 14 subjects in free viewing conditions. Stimuli were videos with a resolution of 720p, 30 fps which represent overall 26599 frames and 887 seconds.…”

“…UAV vision is dominant and hegemonic [10]. The bird point of view modifies the perspective, size and features of objects [11]. It introduces a loss of pictorial depth cues [12] such as horizontal line [13].…”

“…This is even truer when we consider dynamic salience, which refers to salience for video content. To the best of our knowledge, EyeTrackUAV1 dataset released in 2018 [11] is the only public dataset available for studying the visual deployment over UAV video. There exists another dataset AVS1K [63].…”
