Monitoring mass changes in the Volta River basin using GRACE satellite gravity and TRMM precipitation

Abstract: GRACE satellite gravity data was used to estimate mass changes within the Volta River basin in West African for the period of January, 2005 to December, 2010. We also used the precipitation data from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) to determine relative contributions source to the seasonal hydrological balance within the Volta River basin. We found out that the seasonal mass change tends to be detected by GRACE for periods from 1 month in the south to 4 months in the north of the basin after t… Show more

“…Yangtze, 4 Volta, 5 Nile, 6 and other river basins. Additional studies from GRACE are related to monitoring the groundwater withdrawal in India 7 and China, 8 contributions of glaciers and ice caps to sea-level rise, 9 and evaluation of naturally and anthropogenically induced variations in water availability in Africa.…”

“…Equation (5) was suitable to account for the month-to-month changes of the surface of the lake. Many studies have reported the contribution of Lake Volta on the overall gain of water storage over WA [19,20,33,47,57,58]. For instance, Moore et al [47] assumed an invariant surface area in their study for Lake Volta, among other areas.…”

“…Additionally, Forootan et al [11] employed this dataset together with sea surface temperature (SST) data for the water storage deduction of WA. Furthermore, several studies [12,19,32,33] have employed this data over WA, and Awange et al [34] reported that it performed quite well over Africa.…”

“…As a result, satellite altimetry has become a widely used tool for monitoring water level changes in large lakes, with improved data accuracy Remote Sens. 2017, 9, 842 3 of 15 and calibration algorithms [6]. However, quantification of lake storage change relies on not only accurate measurements of lake levels change, but also good knowledge of the surrounding topography and bathymetry, which are often poorly known.…”

“…Recently, a few studies (e.g., [11,15]) have noted evidence of increasing TWS over the VRB, especially around Lake Volta. Ahmed et al [11] and Moore and Williams [13] have attributed this to the impoundment of water by Akosombo Dam.…”
