Heavy metals pollution is a major concern on a global scale. The present work evaluated the cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) concentrations in water, soil, forages (Avena sativa, Brassica campestris, Medicago sativa, Pennisetum glaucum and Trifolium alexandrinum), milk and hair samples of cows. The samples taken according to trophic levels of the food chain were collected from selected arid regions of Khushab, Punjab, Pakistan and analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The concentrations of Cd and Cu were found in the range of 0.041-0.065 mg/L, 0.585-1.341 mg/L in water; 0.223-2.600 mg/kg, 11.550-15.853 mg/kg in soil; 0.0037-0.682 mg/kg, 3.0917-8.208 mg/kg in fodder; 0.0457-0.137 mg/kg, 0.0167-0.690 mg/L in milk and 0.043-0.112 mg/kg, 0.0427-0.497 mg/kg in hair, respectively. The Cd and Cu concentrations in water, soil, forage, milk and hair were safer compared to standard limits. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), Enrichment factor (EF), Daily Intake of Metal (DIM), and Health Risk Index (HRI) were found less than 1 in Cd and Cu whereas PLI<1 in Cd and PLI>1 in Cu that indicates copper pollution in soil. So, regular monitoring of heavy metals was required to appraise contamination levels in the environment.

A Monitoring System for Air Quality and Soil Environment in Mining Areas Based on the Internet of Things

In order to solve the intensifying problem of heavy metal pollution of soil in mining areas, a method for monitoring air quality and soil environment in mining areas based on the Internet of Things is proposed. Using meta-analysis method and health risk assessment method, the impact of mining on soil heavy metal content in Southwest China was quantitatively analyzed, and the relationship between soil heavy metal value and its potential influencing factors was discussed, as well as the heavy metal pollution, ecological risk, and health caused by soil mining activities. Risks were assessed. The results showed that artificial and oral intake were the main modes of soil heavy metal exposure, with the highest daily intakes for noncarcinogenic risk children and the highest daily intakes for carcinogenic risk adult females. The noncarcinogenic risk (HQ>1) of soil As and Pb exposure to children was 3.74 and 1.44, respectively. The carcinogenic risk values of As, Cd, Cr, and Ni in soil were all higher than 10-6, indicating that the carcinogenic risk was within the tolerance range of human body. Children were exposed to the combined noncarcinogenic risk ( HI = 3.83 ), and the risk values of the three types of recipients were 1.19 × 10 − 4 , 1.21 × 10 − 4 , and 1.06 × 10 − 4 , respectively. The correlation between heavy metal content and environmental factors was obtained. It is verified that the system in this paper can effectively monitor the meteorological environment and soil environment, and at the same time, it reveals the pollution law of heavy metals in the soil of the mining area, which provides supporting conditions for future mining and heavy metal pollution management.

In many countries with wastewater irrigation and intensive use of fertilizers (minerals and organics), heavy metal deposition by crops is regarded as a major environmental concern. A study was conducted to determine the impact of mineral fertilizers, cow manure, poultry manure, leaf litter, and sugarcane bagasse on soil’s trace Pb content and edible parts of vegetables. It also evaluated the risk of lead (Pb) contamination in water, soil, and food crops. Six vegetables (Daucus carota, Brassica oleracea, Pisum sativum, Solanum tuberosum, Raphanus sativus, and Spinacia oleracea) were grown in the field under twelve treatments with different nutrient and water inputs. The lead concentrations in soil, vegetables for all treatments and water samples ranged from 1.038–10.478, 0.09346–9.0639 mg/kg and 0.036–0.26448 mg/L, The concentration of lead in soil treated with wastewater in treatment (T6) and vegetable samples was significantly higher, exceeding the WHO’s permitted limit. Mineral and organic fertilizers combined with wastewater treatment reduced lead (Pb) concentrations in vegetables compared to wastewater application without organic fertilizers. Health risk indexes for all treatments except wastewater treatment (T6) were less than one. Pb concentrations in mineral fertilizers, cow manure, poultry manure, leaf litter, and sugarcane bagasse treated were determined to pose no possible risk to consumers.
