Monitoring of Eco-Restoration of Mangrove Wetlands through Time Series Satellite Images: A Study on Krishna-Godavari Delta Region, East Coast of India

Abstract: Comparative analysis of time series satellite images spread over the past four decades indicated significant changes in the mangrove environment of the Krishna-Godavari twin deltas along the east coast of India. We analyzed Landsat-MSS, TM and ETM images from 1977, 1990, and 2000, respectively, and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite images from 1992, 2001, and 2013, which indicated that the mangrove cover in the region increased from 35,058 ha in 1977 to 39,283 ha by 2013. In spite of loss of mangrove vegetation … Show more

“…The KWLS witnessed a heavy loss of mangrove cover, i.e. approximately 13.24 km 2 of mangrove cover from 1970 to 1990 (Kubo et al 2018). The subsequent efforts in understanding the importance of the crucial habitat loss led to the restoration of approximately 74.4 km 2 by mangrove planting (Prasad et al 2017).…”

“…The twin delta system of Krishna and Godavari rivers, i.e. Krishna-Godavari delta, (K-G delta) drains into the Bay of Bengal in the east (Kallepalli et al 2017;Kubo et al 2018). Together, these adjacent deltas cover 12,700 km 2 with strand plains, lagoons, muddy regions, and mangrove forests (Selvam 2003).…”
