Monitoring of groundwater quality for drinking purposes using the WQI method and its health implications around inactive mines in Vemula-Vempalli region, Kadapa District, South India

Abstract: A study was conducted to evaluate the groundwater quality and health risk assessment for drinking purposes around inactive mining areas in the rural regions of Vemula-Vempalli region using the water quality index (WQI) method. For this study, forty groundwater samples were collected from bore wells and analyzed for physical parameters and major cations and anions followed by standard methods of APHA. From the analytical results, most of the groundwater samples are in alkaline nature; EC, TDS, and TH values are… Show more

“…Waterlogging is caused by the intensive use of surface water in irrigation project command areas. The increased use of groundwater for agriculture, industry, and home purposes produces ongoing depletion of water levels, well drying, and water quality issues [24]. Thus, water resource management is necessary to protect aquifers and ensure they continue to provide water at a reasonable cost.…”

“…A variety of water pollution indices are available for assessing the pollution state of any river body, Pollution load index (23), overall index of pollution (34), Contamination Index (32), Heavy metal pollution index (HMPI) (39), Geoaccumulation index (I-geo) (5), Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI) (26).The majority of scientists utilize these indices to determine whether or not the water is suitable for human consumption. As a result, assessing the quantity and quality of water and providing a database is critical for planning and improving water management approaches (38).The decline in water quality of the main Iraqi water resources is one of the important reasons to use the water quality index in Iraq to simplify the results of many water quality data (30). Some studies used the WPI to assess water quality in Iraq (15,21,12,20) (31).…”

“…Shallow groundwater levels are influenced by a number of variables, including terrain, soil type, wastewater sources, type of land use, and the quantity of local rainfall (Hadi and Al-Wan, 2020). The reaction of the groundwater and aquifer lithology is critical in determining the water quality (Gnanachandrasamy et al, 2020;Yenugu et al, 2020). Due to the connection between surface water, irrigation water, and groundwater in agricultural regions, the hydrodynamic characteristics of groundwater are typically altered (Hui et al, 2020).…”
