Monitoring of Large-Area IoT Sensors Using a LoRa Wireless Mesh Network System: Design and Evaluation

Abstract: A recently conducted indoor-to-outdoor measurement campaign for investigating the propagation characteristics of an 8 × 8 virtual multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) based wireless sensor network (WSN) is presented in this paper. The campaign is conducted in an instrumentation room devoid of windows, but filled with different noisy electrical and measuring units. The channel impulse responses are reported when a 20 MHz wide signal is transmitted at 2.53 GHz. Measurements are collected for 15 different spatia… Show more

“…LoRaWAN defines the communication protocol and the system architecture for the network and uses LoRa as the physical layer. Although there are several recent works on the application of LoRa/LoRaWAN to multiple scenarios [150], only a few of them are focused on the deployment of smart campuses services [66,70,[151][152][153]. For example, the authors of [152] analyze the indoor and outdoor performance of LoRaWAN on a French smart campus.…”

“…From receiver channel estimation block LTE-CommSense instrument [8] first obtains the channel properties in between eN odeB and U E. The channel estimation block finds the channel impulse response (CIR) which represents the properties of the dynamic channel [11]. It can be noted here that the CommSense type of sensing does not need any dedicated transmitter contrary to the proposals in ( [12], [13], [14], [15], [16]) and hence does not need to adhere to transmitter related regulations. The major novelty of CommSense lies in the fact that compared to existing systems ( [17], [18], [19]) on localization using WiFi or GSM, in our case we are using no transmitter and it is purely based on pilot carriers only.…”

“…After broad adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT), growing interest from industry, researchers, governments, and developers was given to IoT's particular niche -Industrial IoT (IIoT) [5]. This sector aims at covering the machine-to-machine communications (M2M) domain and topics related to modern Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) including ones operating in both licensed [6,7] and unlicensed bands [8,9].…”
