Monitoring of plant induced electrical signal of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) under changing light and CO2 conditions

Abstract: Changing environmental conditions can affect plant growth by influencing water and nutrient transport and photosynthesis. Plant physiological responses under changing environmental conditions can be non-destructively monitored using electrodes as plant induced electrical signal (PIES). Objective of the study was to monitor PIES in response to increased CO 2 and decreased photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The PIES increased during day time when transpiration and photosynthesis occurs and monitored CO 2… Show more

“…1 a). The temperature reached its peak after 1 h of the peak PPFD, and the CO 2 was the highest when the PPFD reached the highest level indicating that CO 2 assimilation was related to the PPFD [ 22 ]. The PPFD of Area 3 was missing because of a sensor failure.…”

“…Abiotic and biotic stress induced changes in nutrient uptake, which is important factor in diagnosing abnormal metabolism and reduced yield of plant [ 1 ]. When a plant was exposed to stress conditions, the PIES did not respond to environmental conditions and could not be predicted by the environmental conditions [ 22 , 23 ]. In this case, a comparison of the monitored PIES and predicted PIES will help in diagnosing plant stress in smart farms and improving growth conditions for plants in their early stages of stress [ 23 ].…”

“…Previous research has demonstrated that it can be used to evaluate the temperature-dependent growth of broccoli ( Brassica oleracea var. italica ) and pepper ( Capsicum annuum L.) 16 , 17 . Measurements of the PIES can also be used to evaluate ion transport in relation to urea applied to the soil where broccoli is cultivated 18 .…”
