Monitoring particulate composition changes during the flocculation process using polarized light scattering

Abstract: Monitoring the particulate composition changes during the flocculation process is still challenging for the research community. We use an experimental setup based on polarized light scattering to measure the polarization states of the scattered light of the individual particles. We build a classifier based on the support vector machine and feed it with the measured parameters. Results show that the classifier can effectively classify the particulate compositions, such as the sediment particles, flocculants, an… Show more

“…Honestly, it can be expected that the more specialized instruments may give more accurate information about the phytoplankton and the sediments, which may be helpful for our future works. Due to the bulk measurement, the acquisition of chlorophyll and ABI is affected by hydro‐climatic conditions (Kim et al 2020; Chen et al 2021 a , b ). By comparison, our prototype can directly measure and identify the individual particles, and then explicitly obtain the number of phytoplankton and sediments in water over a period of time, and thus unambiguously get the relative proportion of different types of particles.…”

“…Moreover, polarization measurement can be easily adapted into the current scattering measurement system, by adding the polarization state generator (PSG) and the polarization state analyzer (PSA). And the individual measurement of the particles has the advantage to explicitly obtain the particulate compositions in suspension (Chen et al 2021a(Chen et al , 2021b, and also the accurate acquisition of the polarization state of the scattered light is necessary to probe the particles (Liao and Ma 2015). Due to diverse types of the marine particles, the accurately measuring of the polarization state of light scattered by the individual particles may help to recognize the particulate categories.…”

“…Furthermore, we also consider the emerging demand for the in situ detection of the suspended particle in aquatic environments [19][20][21]. Therefore, we propose the shielding strategy that the propagation path between the W1 and focus point is sealed and filled with distilled water, and the illuminating light and scattered light pass by a K9 glass window (W3), as shown in Figure 7.…”

“…Several studies focusing on the design of horizontally baffled flocculators existed in literature while design guidance for hydraulic flocculators has been limited 18 . Chen, Liao 19 used an experimental setup based on polarized light scattering to measure the polarization states of the scattered light of the individual particles. Feng, Zhang 20 simulated the vortex distribution and vorticity in the flow field of the same wave folded-plate flocculator and the opposite wave folded-plate flocculator by Ansys-Fluent.…”
