Monitoring, sampling and automated analysis

Abstract

This section presents the review i) in the area of monitoring pollutants in water/soil medium; and ii) sampling and automated analysis in water/wastewater/ groundwater treatment. Review is based on several papers published during 2001. MonitoringDel Bello et al., (2001) designed the VISIR instrument as a lightweight facility to be embarked on future low Earth orbit operational satellites whose mission requirementsinclude monitoring of open oceans, coastal zones and land surface areas. The instrument consists of an imaging spectrometer working in the visible range, a dualband thermal infrared radiometer and a single-band imager in the short-wave infrared.The instrument provides two operational modes, namely the "global mode" and the "regional mode" with steering capability. The high radiometric performances achieved in both operational modes show the capability to detect very small radiometric changes such as those induced by typical variations of the water quality parameters (chlorophyll, suspended sediments, yellow substance) and surface temperature anomalies. Gao (2001) reported that the total sediment transport under the action of flow included generally three forms of sediment transport, suspended load, density current and bed load. The author discussed about how to realize simultaneously these three forms of sediment movement in an identical physical model. Gerristen et al. (2001) discussed the modeling of suspended particulate matter (SPM) patterns and their variation on North Sea over the time scale of several months in this paper. The nature of the study was a sensitivity analysis of the various modules forming the integrated SPM model: the hydrodynamic model, the wave model and the SPM transport and erosion-sedimentation model.
