Monocyte/Lymphocyte Ratio and MCHC as Predictors of Collateral Carotid Artery Disease—Preliminary Report

Abstract: Background: Carotid artery disease accounts for 30% of ischemic strokes in the general population. Numerous biomarkers have been investigated for predicting either the progression or the severity of the disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare hematologic indices among patients referred for surgical interventions due to severe carotid disease. Methods: In total, 135 patients (87 (64.4%) men and 48 (35.6%) women) with a mean age of 70 ± 8 years who underwent surgical carotid intervention were… Show more

“…However, all the participants in our study were patients with CHD, and the relationship between MLR and carotid plaque was stronger than that between MLR and NLR. [22][23][24] More recently, some clinical studies showed that MLR was related to CHD severity; MLR > 0.3 has predictive values for colleterial carotid stenosis and may be used as an easily accessible indicator for AS severity. These findings were consistent with the results of the present study.…”

“… 27 In contrast, Tomasz Urbanowicz and Serhat Karaman found that high MCHC had a similar role in predicting the severity of carotid artery disease and acute coronary syndromes. 18 , 19 It suggested that the prognosis of MCHC for cardiovascular disease is mixed.…”

“…MCHC, a common indicator of anemia, has been shown to correlate with the prognosis of myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure (CHF), acute coronary syndrome, and atherosclerosis severity. 16 19 However, as a common cardiovascular disease, few studies on the association between MCHC and APE. Therefore, we plan to conduct a study to investigate the relationship between MCHC and prognosis in patients with APE.…”

“…According to studies on the pathogenesis of w-AIHA, autoantibodies, the complement system, phagocytes, cytotoxic CD8 + T cells and NK cells performing ADCC, B and T lymphocytes (including CD4 + T regulatory (Treg) cells), and cytokines play important roles in the pathogenesis of w-AIHA ( 1 ). When either a high concentration of IgG or IgG with high affinity to complement C is bound to erythrocytes, the destruction of RBCs may increase as they pass through the spleen ( 1 , 29 ). Therefore, we hypothesize that the IgG concentration in the sera of w-AIHA patients with type O blood may remain high for a long time, promoting recurrence by activating complement C or directly coating the surfaces of erythrocytes, which may require serological testing for confirmation.…”

“…The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, which is an index that reflects the average volume of RBCs, is recognized as an indicator of the average HGB concentration per RBC and is predictive of the development of a variety of diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), internal carotid artery stenosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastasis ( 29 – 31 ). Based on the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the MCHC ( OR = 0.968, 95% CI is 0.938–0.998, P = 0.040) was found to be a protective factor for the early recurrence of primary w-AIHA in children, and the ROC curve analysis and survival analysis showed that patients with primary w-AIHA with an MCHC value of ≥313.5 pg/fL at the initial diagnosis had a lower recurrence rate.…”
