Monofilament Gillnet Selectivity Parameters for European Chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.1758) in Atikhisar Reservoir, Canakkale, Turkey

Abstract: Selectivity parameters of gillnets used for fish catching are very important for fisheries management in lakes. The main purpose of the present study was to estimate the selectivity parameters of monofilament gill nets mesh size of 56, 64 and 72 mm (stretched mesh size) used for European chub (Leuciscus cephalus L.1758) in Atikhisar Reservoir, Canakkale, Turkey. The indirect method proposed by Holt was used for the estimation of the selectivity parameters. The common selection factors and common standard devia… Show more

“…Indeed, in the management of invasive species, this knowledge can help to direct efforts towards the capture of those specimens which contribute most to population recruitment. The common selectivity factor for the gill-nets used in the present research was 5.42; this parameter usually varies from 5 to 10 (Ozekinci et al, 2007). The value calculated for the common standard deviation proved to be rather high: 5.71; this may be due to the fact that the goldfish, in addition to becoming entangled in the mesh of the net by the gills, as is usually the case, is also very often caught by the ossified and markedly serrated ribs of the dorsal and anal fins.…”

“…These values are in line with Andreev (1962) who asserted that this parameter generally varies between 5 and 10. Knowledge on selectivity of the nets represents one of the most important tools for fishery management (Louette and Declerk, 2006;Ozekinci et al, 2007). The high selectivity of gill nets permits to use specific mesh sizes to catch a suitable narrow size range of fish (Hamley, 1975;Borgstrøm, 1989;Petrakis and Stergiou, 1995).…”

“…Để đánh giá khả năng chọn lọc của 5 mẫu lưới với kích thước mắt lưới khác nhau (24, 26, 28, 30 và 34 mm), hệ số chọn lọc và độ lệch chuẩn của chúng được xác định thông qua việc phân tích từng cặp mắt lưới có kích thước mắt lưới gần nhau nhất, khi đó sẽ có 4 cặp mắt lưới được sử dụng để tính toán (24)(25)(26), (26)(27)(28), (28)(29)(30) và (30)(31)(32)(33)(34).…”
