Abstract:For tissues to develop and maintain their function, cells must orchestrate their behaviour by generating and transmitting contractile forces. These forces are transmitted to their surrounding matrix or neighbouring cells via adhesion complexes. How tissues reach a force-balance is often assumed to involve intercellular stresses counterbalancing those in the substrate. However, experimental findings indicate that dampening focal adhesions can increase intercellular stresses. As the ECM is rarely uniform in comp… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
