Monosodium Glutamate Plus Artemether-lumefantrine Overdose Altered Malondialdehyde, Total Protein and Albumin Concentration in Rats

Abstract: This study aimed at assessing alterations in malondialdehyde, MDA, total protein and albumin concentration in the serum and liver homogenate of monosodium glutamate (MSG)-challenged rats co-treated with artemether-lumefantrine, AL. Methods involving colourimetric estimation were employed in thirty rats randomly grouped into six (n = 5) and for seven consecutive days, fed feed and water (Group A), AL therapeutic dose (Group B), AL overdose (therapeutic dose × 5) (Group C), MSG (8000 mg/kg body weight) (Group D)… Show more

“…and co-assessed by the metabolic content of Zn, Mg, ALB and TP [18]. Decrease in TP and ALB content indicated increased generation of free radicals that promote induction of oxidative stress[34] while decrease in Zn and Mg content indicated down-regulation in the activity of antioxidant enzyme, SOD and consequent increase in oxidative stress[18]. The response on these co-regulators of oxidative stress followingexposure to MSG concertedly pointed to induction of oxidative stress in the rats' heart tissue.…”
