Monstrous Branes

Abstract: We study D-branes in the bosonic closed string theory whose automorphism group is the Bimonster group (the wreath product of the Monster simple group with Z Z 2 ). We give a complete classification of D-branes preserving the chiral subalgebra of Monster invariants and show that they transform in a representation of the Bimonster. Our results apply more generally to self-dual conformal field theories which admit the action of a compact Lie group on both the left-and right-moving sectors.

“…Quantum dimensions also appears in the calculation of left-right entanglement in RCFT [85]. One might perform similar computations in the orbifold VOA V M appeared in section 5.2, by using the Ishibashi boundary CFT states that were constructed in [86] for open bosonic strings ending on D-branes.…”

“…Some results for specific orbifolds have been obtained in [13,14,15,16], but a complete understanding still seems to be lacking. One natural candidate for a symmetry that acts differently on left and right moving degrees of freedom is T-duality.…”

“…The Monster is the symmetry of that conformal field theory, but the Bimonster M C 2 will be the symmetry of a rational conformal field theory with H = V ⊗ V . The paper [29] finds a family of D-branes for the latter theory which are in one-to-one correspondence with the elements of M, and their 'overlaps' g q (1/2)(L 0 +L 0−c/ 24) h equal the McKay-Thompson series T g −1 h . However, we still lack any explanation as to why a conformal field theory involving V should yield interesting physics.…”
