Monte Carlo Evaluation of Internal Dose and Distribution Imaging Due to Insoluble Radioactive Cs-Bearing Particles of Water Deposited Inside Lungs via Pulmonary Inhalation Using PHITS Code Combined with Voxel Phantom Data

Abstract: The role of this study in terms of health physics and radiation protection has been implemented to evaluate the internal dose (relative to the committed equivalent dose) and the dose distribution imaging due to gamma rays (photons) and beta particles emitted from the radioactive Cs-bearing particles in atmospheric aerosol dusts deposited in the lungs via pulmonary inhalation. The PHITS code combined with voxel phantom data (DICOM formats) of human lungs was used. We have dealt with the insoluble radioactive Cs… Show more

“…The risk of internal exposure by radioactive particles is one of great public concerns from the viewpoint of radiation protection 7,8 . The organ dose given by an intake of insoluble Cs-bearing particles is expected to differ from that of soluble particles even with the same radioactivity on account of different biokinetics in the human body.…”

“…Considering such gaps, the conventional risk assessment based on the uniform exposure at an organ scale is insufficient. In addition to the estimation of the intra-tissue dose distribution and biokinetics [ 9 , 10 ], the accumulation of the fundamental in vitro data on local exposure is needed for a better understanding of the radiation risk after exposure to Cs-BMPs.…”
