Monte‐Carlo study of contrast‐enhanced spectral mammography with cadmium telluride photon‐counting x‐ray detectors

James A. Day,
Jesse Tanguay

Abstract: BackgroundContrast‐enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) with photon‐counting x‐ray detectors (PCDs) can be used to improve the classification of breast cancers as benign or malignant. Commercially‐available PCD‐based mammography systems use silicon‐based PCDs. Cadmium‐telluride (CdTe) PCDs may provide a practical advantage over silicon‐based PCDs because they can be implemented as large‐area detectors that are more easily adaptable to existing mammography systems.PurposeThe purpose of this work is to optimize … Show more

“…As evaluated by Day and Tanguay, BPE can significantly impact detectability, with reductions of up to 40% reported under certain conditions, depending on system and technique parameters. 63,64 In this study, ΔSignal, which measures the change in signal intensity due to iodine contrast, is adopted for a focused analysis of the contrast agent's effect. This approach enables the isolation of iodine's specific contribution to the overall signal, thereby offering a direct measure of contrast enhancement.…”

“…Therefore, the findings here should be interpreted as an optimization, in the projection domain, of the detectability of iodine, not necessarily of an iodine‐containing lesion.
