Bias in simulating the stratocumulus‐to‐cumulus transition remains a main source of uncertainties in climate projection and can significantly affect the energy budget in climate models. To gain insights into the transition, this study investigates the cloud transition forced by the sea surface temperature (SST) front and synoptic disturbances in the East China Sea and Kuroshio region in winter based on both observations and regional atmospheric model simulations. The Kuroshio SST front greatly accelerates cloud transition by enhancing surface latent heat flux, marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) dynamical adjustment, and cloud top entrainment. With the sharp SST increase from the cold flank to the Kuroshio SST warm tongue (KWT), surface wind convergence (SWC) over the KWT induced by the SST front and synoptic disturbances enhances the coupling between the cloud layer and subcloud layer. An underlying positive feedback between the SWC and latent heating in the cloud layer can enhance abrupt change in cloud properties and maintain cloud band over the KWT against the decoupling through the so‐called “Deepening‐Warming” mechanism induced by latent heating. From the KWT downwind southward, the surface layer turbulent mixing weakens, while latent heating in the cloud layer and cloud top longwave radiative cooling enhance buoyancy and vertical mixing in the cloud layer. This difference in vertical mixing between the cloud layer and subcloud layer facilitates the MABL decoupling and impedes upward moisture transport. Meanwhile, decreasing lower tropospheric stability is conducive to the entrainment of drier and warmer air from above into the cloud layer, strengthening cloud evaporation.

Surveys were conducted during 2020 and 2021 to study the emerging lepidopteran pests inflicting cereals in Tunisia, with specific emphasis on maize and sorghum crops. A species was collected from traps placed in the Jendouba, Bizerte, Nabeul and Gabes regions. Thus, this study carried out first report on its identification, distribution, population density and damage. Results showed that M. loreyi was abundant in all prospected areas, with total adult captures reaching 4779 and 9499 moths on sorghum and maize, respectively, during 2020. Moreover, the mean infestation percentage reached its maximum during August at 31.05% and 20.69% for the Jendouba and Bizerte regions, respectively, while the highest infestations were observed in the Gabes and Nabeul regions during July, with respective mean values of 13.54% and 21.35%. In addition, results revealed that the highest pest incidence occurred in the Gabes region, with values of 11.1 ± 0.47 and 5.7 ± 0.48 during 2020 and 2021, respectively. Additionally, results pointed out that M. loreyi achieved two summer generations in the different localities of Tunisia. Overall, this study provides basic insights into the ecology and population biology of M. loreyi, which are required to establish an effective pest control program.

According to the sixth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global climate change is now unequivocal. Tunisia, like many other countries, has been affected by climate changes, including rising temperatures, intense heatwaves, and altered precipitation regimes. Tunisia's mean annual temperatures has risen about +1.4 °C in the twentieth century, with the most rapid warming taking place since the 1970s. Drought represents a primary contributing factor to tree decline and dieback. Long‐term drought can result in reduced growth and health of trees, thereby increasing their susceptibility to insect pests and pathogens. Reported increases in tree mortality point toward accelerating global forest vulnerability under hotter temperatures and longer, more intense droughts. In order to assess the effect of these climate changes on the current state of forest ecosystems in Tunisia and their evolution, an investigative study was required. Here, we review the current state of knowledge on the effects of climate change on sclerophyllous and semi‐deciduous forest ecosystems in Tunisia. Natural disturbance during recent years, as well as the adaptability and resilience of some forest species to climate change, were surveyed. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is a multi‐scalar drought index based on climate data that has been used to analyse drought variability. The SPEI time scale analysis showed a negative trend over the 1955–2021 period in Tunisian forest regions. In 2021, Tunisia lost 280 km2 of tree cover to fires, which is equivalent to 26% of the total lost area between 2008 and 2021. Changing climate conditions have also affected phenological parameters, with an advance in the start of the green season (SOS) of 9.4 days, a delay at the end of the green season (EOS) of 5 days, with a consequent extended duration of the green season (LOS) by an average of 14.2 days. All of these alarming findings invite us to seek adaptation strategies for forest ecosystems. Adapting forests to climate change is therefore a challenge for scientists as well as policymakers and managers.
