Mood Changes Following Modern-Dance Classes

Abstract: Full-time dancers typically spend a large proportion of time participating in dance classes. The present study examined mood state changes following two contrasting modern-dance styles on a sample of full-time dancers. Twenty-three dancers completed the Brunel University Mood Scale (Terry, Lane, Lane, & Keohane, 1999) to assess anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension, and vigor before and after two different dance classes. One class taught was the Jose Limon technique style, characterized by light flowi… Show more

“…The positive increase in POMS mood scores supports previous research looking at dance and exercise in relation to mood (Rokka et al, 2010;Steinberg et al, 1998). The decrease in TMD scores and the trend to increased vigor resembles the pattern of results found by Maraulakis and Zerras (1993) and Lane et al (2003) who, in a sample of non PD participants, found an increase in scores of vigor straight after dance classes. Furthermore, Hansen et al (2001) showed that exercise, including dance aerobics, improved scores of vigor, TMD and fatigue.…”

“…Dance has also been shown to regulate mood such that positive mood is increased and negative mood is decreased following dance exercise interventions over short-term, progressive periods of up to 50 minutes (Hansen et al, 2001; Kennedy and Newton, 1997) and over a longer period of 7 weeks (Steinberg et al, 1998). Furthermore, improvements in mood, including those measured by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) have been observed after just 10 minutes of exercise, including dance, resulting in higher vigour and less confusion (Lane et al, 2003; Maroulakis and Zervas, 1993; Rokka et al, 2010) and an improvement in total mood score, vigour and fatigue (Abrantes et al, 2012; Hansen et al, 2001).…”

“…Also, dance enhanced the locomotor ability (ie, movement from one place to another) of individuals with severe rheumatoid arthritis [ 17 ]. Other dance genres such as jazz dance [ 18 ], Argentine tango [ 19 , 20 ], Turkish folklore [ 21 ], Korean traditional dance [ 22 ], social dance [ 23 ], ballroom dance [ 24 ], modern dance [ 25 ], waltz [ 26 ], and specific designed-exercise dance programs [ 27 ] have shown benefits for individuals with a myriad of clinical conditions.…”

“…Other studies have shown that aerobic exercise training may be useful for reducing the severity and duration of depressive reactions following stressful life change (Roth & Holmes, 1987). Significant short-term positive mood changes have also been noted after participating in modern dance classes (Lane, Hewston, Redding & Whyte, 2003). A study by McInman and Berger (1993) examined the relationship between short-term changes in self-concept and mood associated with aerobic dance participation.…”
