Mood Patterns Based on Momentary Assessment of Positive and Negative Moods Over a Day and Coronary Artery Calcification in the CARDIA Study

Abstract: Objective: Retrospective assessments of negative mood have predicted coronary artery disease development and progression. Using momentary assessment, we evaluated associations between average positive and negative mood states and diurnal mood patterns, with prevalent and incident coronary artery calcification (CAC), a measure of calcified atherosclerosis. Methods: In a prospective cohort study of 669 white and African American men and women, aged 33 to 45 years, from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in You… Show more

“…The reasons for this are not clear. However, previous studies have shown that negative mood in this population is related to adverse health outcomes 32, 33 . This is interesting because studies have also demonstrated that negative mood is lower in African Americans compared with other groups 32, 34 .…”

“…However, previous studies have shown that negative mood in this population is related to adverse health outcomes 32, 33 . This is interesting because studies have also demonstrated that negative mood is lower in African Americans compared with other groups 32, 34 . In an examination of day-to-day emotions and emotional responses to conflict across races, one study found that African Americans were less likely to use emotional tactics when they cope with conflict 34 .…”

“…Similarly, Shirom, Toker, Jacobson, and Balicer () found that in a sample followed for 20 years (mean age initially was 41.7 years) feelings of vigor predicted lower mortality and diabetes, but not ischemic heart disease. Kroenke Seeman, Matthews, Adler, and Epel () found that positive affect predicted prevalent coronary artery calcification 15 years later, but not to progressive calcification at 20 years follow‐up. Because health outcomes cover such a wide range of states—from overcoming cancer to catching a cold—we need to more carefully analyze the type and intensity of illnesses that are likely to be influenced by SWB, and why.…”

“…Certain mental disorders and stress are conducive to atherosclerosis. Kroenke et al [57] revealed that a negative mood is predictive of a greater progression of calcified atherosclerosis, compared to a positive mood. Everson-Rose et al [58] found that high levels of stress, hostility, and depressive symptoms are associated with a significantly increased risk of incident stroke or transient ischemic attacks in middle-aged and older adults.…”
