Purpose The purpose of this article is to summarize three Luhmannian critiques on morality, illustrate new roles for morality and add constructive interpretations.Design/methodology/approach Luhmann has recently been described as downright negative toward morality, resulting in a refusal to use ethics as a sociologist, thus leading to a limited use of his theory in moral issues. A constructive interpretation could support a more functional use of morality in social system theory.Findings First, Luhmann signals that morality can no longer fulfill its integrative function in society but also that society has recourse to moral sensitivity. Second, Luhmann describes how anxiety is crucial in modern morality and indicates which role risk and danger could play. The author builds further on this and proposes the concept of “social system attention” that can provide answers to individual and organizational anxiety. The author proposes that institutionalized socialization can support an integrative morality. Third, Luhmann states that ethics today is nothing more than a utopia but also that the interdiction of moral self-exemption is an essential element. The author adds that a relational ontology for social systems theory can avoid ethics as utopia.Practical implicationsThis article is a programmatic plea to further elaborate morality from a system theory perspective in which meaning is relationally positioned.Originality/value This article could potentially provide a more functional application of morality in social systems, thus leading to improvements of attempts of ethical decision-making. The originality of the approach lies in the interpretation of basic assumptions of Luhmann social system theory that are not core to his theory.

A Digital Model of Full-Cycle Training Based on the Zettelkasten and Interval Repetition System

The study aims to propose and validate a new digital model based on the Zettelkasten and interval repetition system for comprehensive and full-cycle training of the students. The core idea is to enhance the learning experience and effectiveness of the given training course by enhancing the student's attention during the learning and long-term information retention. In pursuit of the aforementioned research aim, the study incorporates a quantitative research methodology by combining experiments and a survey. In particular, the effectiveness of the proposed model was assessed via an achievement assessment involving two groups of students and assessing their scores on the same test. This was followed by a metacognitive awareness survey of the two groups to investigate their perceived understanding and performance (with and without the use of a model). The proposed model was found to be effective in enhancing the learning experience and effectiveness of the students on the training course. The Zettelkasten facilitates the management of the student's attention, while the interval repetition system contributes to increased retention. The students that used this model in their learning and preparation scored better than their peers. Also, they reported a significantly higher understanding and awareness of their learning than their peers. The model can be incorporated into the learning process or the provision of training courses to the students. This study is the first to suggest the integration of Zettelkasten and the interval repetition system into one learning model for the students. The article proposes a practical model that can be incorporated by teachers to improve the learning effectiveness of their students. Tax has been the site of many battles between ethical behaviour and formal compliance with tax law, particularly in an international context. This paper accepts the functional differentiation of society and explores the amorality of systems. The environmental noise about unfair tax competition by states and tax avoidance by multinational enterprises is extensive. The autopoietic legal system cannot be relied upon to deliver a concurring view, instead producing its self‐referential and sometimes contradictory communications. The empirical setting considers Ireland and Apple and the legal system's verdict on the legality of their tax relationship. This legal verdict changes as the case progresses from European Commission to one court after another, a contingent and uncertain outcome that may be prompted by systemic irritation but which is not co‐ordinated with moral commentary on Ireland or Apple. The absence of coordination by the legal system with environmental commentary on fairness means that, as the legal verdict changes from court to superior court, moral commentary is not a reliable predictor of legal outcome.
