Moral communication observed with social systems theory. An introduction

Abstract: PurposeThe present article pertains to recent advances in social systems theoretical analyses of moral communication.Design/methodology/approachAn introduction to basic concepts and requirements for systems-theoretical approaches to morality and communication is provided, as is an introduction to 14 contributions to a pertinent special issue of Kybernetes.FindingsThe review of these 14 cases suggests that social systems theory enables researchers to study moral communication without necessarily performing it.O… Show more

“…Scholars have put forward important critical points of discussion about Luhmann's theory, such as the role of morality related to risks and dangers (Morales, 2022), reclaiming the position of morality in functional differentiation (Valentinov, 2019; Valentinov et al ., 2016) or discussing the tensions between ethics and epistemology (Dallmann, 1998; Roth et al ., 2020; Scholl, 2012).
