Morbidity

Abstract: The focus of critical care has evolved from saving lives to preservation of function. Morbidity rates in pediatric critical care are about double mortality rates. Morbidity includes complications of disease and medical care. In pediatric critical care, functional status morbidity is an intermediate outcome in the progression towards death, and is the result of the same factors associated with mortality including physiological profiles (PRISM), and case-mix factors. The Functional Status Scale (FSS) developed b… Show more

“…The development of morbidities after a stay in the pediatric ICU has been reported in previous studies, ( 3 , 14 , 15 , 20 , 21 ) but for a wide range of diseases/situations. Considering this scenario, the present study is the first to investigate the functional status of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease who have undergone surgery and were admitted to the pediatric ICU using the FSS-Brazil.…”

“…Studies of functional outcomes after pediatric ICU stay have gained prominence recently, but they have include patients with a wide range of illnesses. ( 20 - 22 ) In Brazil, studies on functional deficits in specific illnesses are scarce, ( 14 ) making it difficult to identify potential risk groups and factors that may be associated with worsened functional status after discharge from the pediatric ICU.…”

“…As our detection and treatment of various illnesses in the PICU improves, so does PICU survival; however, this may also be associated with greater long-term morbidity ( 48 ). At this time, it remains unclear whether the association between AKI and long-term mortality and healthcare utilization is related to the direct effect of kidney damage or if AKI is a marker of medical complexity.…”

“…This aspect is critically important, given the current landscape of pediatric critical care, where decreased mortality has been exchanged for increased short-and long-term morbidities. 19 We also have not determined the optimal timing, dose, or duration of rehabilitation interventions in critically ill children. How much is too much?…”
