The objective of this study is to examine the impact of government environmental concerns on green innovation and whether this has a “leverage effect” or a “crowding‐out effect.” This study employs a two‐way fixed‐effects model to conduct an empirical test using panel data from 2010 to 2020 on Chinese firms listed in heavy‐polluting industries. The results suggest that an increase in government environmental concerns can promote corporate green innovation. However, government environmental concerns primarily stimulate strategic innovation rather than substantive innovation. After a series of robustness and endogeneity tests, the conclusions of this paper still hold. Corporate green innovation induced by government environmental concerns is not the “leverage effect” superimposed on existing innovation activities but the “crowding‐out effect” of other technological innovation. The heterogeneity tests in this paper indicate that the impact is more pronounced for firms with poorer environmental conditions, stronger political connections, and richer executive backgrounds.

In response to climate change, governments have adopted various climate policies. However, climate policy uncertainty (CPU) may have important implications for the business sector. Is enterprise green innovation (GI) affected by CPU? This study investigates the impact of CPU on enterprise GI. The China CPU index is created first in this study. It uses panel data from Chinese A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2021 to explore the impact of CPU on GI through the fixed effects model, the mediating effects model, and the moderating effects model. The results show that: (1) CPU significantly suppresses GI, according to the findings. (2) CPU inhibits enterprise GI by exacerbating enterprise financing constraints. (3) Government subsidies can mitigate the inhibiting effect of CPU on GI. (4) There is heterogeneity in the negative impact of CPU on enterprise GI, mainly on non-state-owned enterprises. This study suggests several recommendations for coping with CPU in China.

Impact of digital transformation on renewable energy companies’ performance: Evidence from China

The rapid growth of the renewable energy industry provides essential opportunities for China to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. A rising number of renewable energy companies are positively embracing digital transformation in the digital age. However, the relationship between digital transformation and the performance of renewable energy companies remains unclear. To fill this gap, leveraging the latest advances in textual analysis, we quantify the extent of a renewable energy enterprise’s digital transformation. Meanwhile, based on fixed effect model and mediating effect model, we investigate the influence of digital transformation on firm performance using a panel data of Chinese A-share listed renewable energy companies. The results indicate that digital transformation enhances a renewable energy enterprise’s performance. Further, the promotion effect of digital transformation is greater among state-owned enterprises and large firms and is only helpful for firms in the eastern area. Moreover, we document that when a renewable energy enterprise adopts digital transformation, it has higher operating efficiency, lower cost, and better innovation success resulting in better performance. This research elucidates the role of digital transformation in forwarding the development of renewable energy companies and bears significant policy implications.
