More Than Maternal Sensitivity Shapes Attachment

Abstract: The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the effect of a set of factors from multiple levels of influence: infant temperament, infant regulatory behavior, and maternal sensitivity on infant's attachment. Our sample consisted of 48 infants born prematurely and their mothers. At 1 and 3 months of age, mothers described their infants' behavior using the Escala de Temperamento do Bebé. At 3 months of age, infants' capacity to regulate stress was evaluated during Tronick's Face-to-Face Still-Face (FFSF… Show more

“…For this reason, the effect of these factors when dissociated remains unclear. Fuertes et al (2006Fuertes et al ( , 2008 have shown, in samples where economics is not correlated with education, that maternal education affects mother's representation of their infant's difficult temperament, maternal sensitivity, and motherinfant attachment. In the present work, maternal education and SES are highly correlated and, for that reason, it is difficult to support further speculations about maternal education contribution per se on mother-infant quality of interaction.…”

“…Since priori studies performed with prematurely born infant found that types of coping behaviour predict attachment status (Braungart-Rieker, Garwood, Powers, & Wang, 2001;Fuertes et al, 2006Fuertes et al, , 2009, we investigate the predictive impact of a set of infant, maternal and demographic factors on Positive Other-Directed, Negative Other-Directed and Self-Directed Coping behaviour. First, our findings corroborate an extensive literature that describes the Still-Face Effect (e.g., Cohn & Tronick, 1987, 1989Gianino & Tronick, 1988;Toda & Fogel, 1993;Tronick et al, 1978;Weinberg & Tronick, 1996).…”
