Morfología Testicular del Yaque Leiarius marmoratus (Pisces: Siluridae) en Estadio de Madurez Reproductiva

Establishing guidelines for responsible management in fish production systems requires knowledge of the basic biology of the fish to be raised. The objective of this work was to determine the reproductive capacity of hybrids produced from the crossing of females of Pseudoplatystoma metaense with males of Leiarius marmoratus. Males presented a digitiform, unrestricted spermatogonial testicle containing caudal digits producing glycoproteins that do not form a seminal vesicle. It was possible to find free sperm in the lumen of the tubules and in the ducts. The ovary of the females was found to be saccular and synchronous with at least three groups of oocytes. In the first year of life, only oogonia up to previtellogenic oocytes (cortical alveolus 284.9 ± 35.7 mm in diameter) were found. After the second year vitellogenic oocytes 730 ± 3.78 mm in diameter were observed. The events of gonadal development of the hybrids indicate that they are gonochoric, synchronic animals. The maturation peaks in the high-water season, overlapping with the parental species. Therefore, the escape of hybrids from fish cultures to the rivers may increase the risk of crosses, gene introgression, or diminution of the reproductive capacity of the pure species.

In Colombia and the rest of the world, the decrease in capture fisheries production has turned the aquaculture into an alternative source of protein for the populations food security as well as an important productive activity, generating employment and income for the rural communities. The Colombian pisciculture is based on red Tilapia Oreochromis sp. (Linnaeus), Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) and cachama blanca Piaractus brachypomus (Cuvier), which currently represent around 96% of the total national production. The remaining 4% comes from other farmed species such as bocachico Prochilodus magdalenae (Steindachner), carp Cyprinus carpio (Linnaeus) and yamúBrycon amazonicus (Spix & Agassiz). From the three main fish species, cachama blanca is the only native species, which has shown excellent performance in pond farming due to its rusticity, omnivorous habits, docility, meat quality, food conversion and disease resistance. The limited offer of Colombian fish farmed species determines its currently low competitiveness and restricted impact on the international markets; thus making necessary to explore the potential of new fish species in order to introduce them to the pisciculture system and to expand the range of fish farming species. A good alternative is the introduction of native catfish, which have great potential for fish farming activity.

Summary Aiming to provide data on the biology of Leiarius marmoratus, which will aid in its production in captivity, as well as in studies for its preservation in the environment, this work had as objectives: analyze and describe main morphological alterations during larval ontogeny of the species. We analyzed 205 individuals, obtained by induced reproduction (Colpani Pisciculture) and kept in CEPTA/ICMBIO, Pirassununga, São Paulo, Brazil. Analyses were performed from hatching moment to 30th day. The specimens were classified into two periods: larval (Stages: vitelline, pre‐flexion, flexion, post‐flexion) and juvenile. Hatched larvae showed ident chromatophores only at anterior and posterior extremities of yolk sac. The standard length ranged from 2.16 mm (yolk) to 28.84 mm (Youth). Dorsal fin rays were initially observed at flexion stage (12–14 rays). Major alterations occurred during post‐flexion/juvenile stage, when dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, anal, and caudal fins were observed and pigmentation intensified throughout the lateral region, forming bands in the body, one between the end of the head and beginning of dorsal to pelvic fin, and another one beginning at dorsal to caudal peduncle and four longitudinal at the head.
