Morphologic and Demographic Predictors of Third Molar Agenesis

Abstract: We aimed to consolidate all available data on worldwide third molar agenesis frequencies, with a particular emphasis on exploring the factors leading authors to find contradictory results for the demographic and morphologic predictors of this anomaly. A total of 12,376 studies were originally identified, then narrowed down to 1,312 for title/abstract screening. On the basis of our inclusion and exclusion criteria, we selected 92 studies, containing 100 effect sizes and 63,314 subjects, for systematic review an… Show more

“…The other patient was only ‘missing’ one maxillary second premolar and the four mandibular incisors. It was further noteworthy that none of the patients examined had agenesis of third molars compared with a frequency of more than 20% in the general population . About one‐third of the patients had supernumerary permanent molars presenting as fourth and even fifth molars.…”

“…Deviations in the formation of permanent teeth are not uncommon in the general population [e.g. 6–10% of European Caucasians have agenesis of one or more teeth mesial to the third molar, the most affected teeth being, in decreasing order, the mandibular second premolar (40%), the maxillary lateral incisor (20%), the maxillary second premolar (20%), and the mandibular central incisor (4%)] , and more than 20% of European Caucasians have agenesis of at least one third molar . One cause of agenesis of this type, affecting the last tooth in each tooth group, might be late initiation of the first teeth in the group of teeth or premature degradation of the dental lamina .…”

“…According to Carter and Worthington [26], 2769 patients was the highest sample used so far. We investigated till date the largest sample size to determine prevalence of third molar agenesis in comparison with previous studies.…”

“…Evolutionary arisen lack of space in the dental arch often results in impaction of the last teeth to erupt, the third molars. Along with frequent aberrant follicle orientation, this leads to increasing third molar impaction prevalence with numbers varying from 17% to 32% …”
