A spontaneous epidemic of nephritis among young rabbits associated with a protozoan parasite has been observed in a certain breeding stock since 1918. It is regarded as a nest infection. The parasite is tentatively classed among the microsporidia and the stages encountered are regarded as vegetative which may perhaps pass through several generations in the same host. It is a parasite of the epithelial cell, provoking no immediate host reactions. These are supposed to follow injury such as destruction of the epithelium and denudation and plugging of the tubules. The localizations in the brain are also without cell reaction, except under special conditions, and the many cell foci present are attributed to coccidia and perhaps bacteria and other intestinal parasites. The kidneys are looked upon as the normal habitat and the brain parasites as aberrant and outside the normal cycle unless it can be shown that the spores discharged into the circulation may again multiply in some organ like the kidneys in direct communication with the exterior. It is highly probable that many reported cases of nephritis among older rabbits used in experiments had their origin in an early invasion of the parasite described.

Besch~ftigung mit der Histologie und Pathologie der Epithelk6rperchen lenkte mieh yon selbst zur Tetaniefrage. Der Zusammenhang beider seheint unabweisbar, ist aber morphologisch allein nicht zu 16sen. Der Tierversuch mul~ eingreifen. Bekanntlich nahm ja die ganze Frage ihren Ansgang yon Tierversuchen, n~mlieh Entnahme der EpithelkSrperehen, yon den zun~ehst noch nicht ganz richtig gedeuteten Versuchen Gleys 1) Anfang der 90er Jahre fiber die beweisenden von Vassale und Generali his zu den bekannten yon Erdheim, der den Namen Tetania parathyreopriva pr~gte. Nachdem Ahnliches auch ffir die menschliehe Tetania strumipriava --d. h. eben aueh parathyreopriva --lestgestellt war, wurden die gleiehen Sehliisse aueh ffir andere menschliehe Tetanieformen, besonders yon Wiener Forsehern, gezogen, und insbesondere die Spasmophilie der Kinder yon Erdheim, dann under seiner Leitung yon Yanase sowie Haber[eld, als Folge yon Blutungen, vor allem solcher w~hrend des Geburtsaktes, dargestellt. Unter denen, welche zu dem gleichen oder ~hnlichem Ergebnis kamen, seien Strada, Harrier, ~. Brandenstein, M5ller, Plazotta, Pollini erw~hnt. Auf der anderen Seite aber haben eine Reihe Forseher --z. B. Auerbach, Thiemich, Bliss, Oppenheimer, Koopmann, Tell der Tetanief~lle Blutungen, solehe dagegen auch bei Vergleichsf~llen ohne Spasmophilie gefunden. Ieh sah in einem F~lle hoohgradiger mani~ester Tetani~ bei einem 8 monatigen Kinde in 2 der 4 Epithelk6rperehen anl~erordentlieh vieI Eisenpigment, wie ich dies bei zahlreichen Kontrollen sonst hie so gesehen habe, zudem waren diese Epithelk~Srperchen ira Wachstum ausgesprochen zuraek-geblJeben, wie dies besonders Habe~Jelcl betont hat.Ist die Frage fiir die mensehliche Tetanie bzw. Spasmophilie anatomisch noch nicht entschieden, so ist ein weiterer Hinweis in Stoffwechselfragen, vor allem in Gemeinsamkeiten des Kalkstoffwechsels *) Die Literaturstandorte s. in meiner Behandlnng der ,,EpithelkSrperehen" im ttenke-Lubarschschen Handbueh.18"
