Morphological and production characteristics of carniolan honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica Poll.) from different parts of Serbia

Abstract: Morphological and production characteristics of honey bee colonies from six regions in Serbia were examined in a two-year study. The colonies were sampled in the valleys of the Rasina and Morava rivers, on Pešter and Kopaonik mountains, in Knjaževac environ and Banat region. Fifty bees with characteristic morphology were sampled from each colony. Colony behaviour was evaluated during spring and autumn inspection in 2002 and 2003. Colonies of the Rasina ecotype were found to have the highest average values of t… Show more

“…There were some variations in the colonies from Morava population where it is slightly higher (51.12%). JEVTIĆ et al (2007) have determined that the occurrence of honey robbing depended on the origin, but also, on the strength and temperament, so weaker and calmer colonies have had trouble defending themselves.…”

“…Dyer and Seeley [37] reported the fore wing length in A. mellifera of different attitudes between 7.64 to 9.70 mm. Jevtic et al [38] reported fore wing length ranged from 7.81 to 10.37 mm and width from 2.12 to 3.75 mm from different parts of Serbia. Alattal et al [39] reported the length of forewing of 3 clusters of local Saudi honey bees as 8.79 ± 0.22, 8.31 ± 0.19 and 8.04 ±0.12 and width of fore wing as 3.05 ± 0.22, 2.86 ± 0.06 and 2.76 ± 0.05 mm.…”

“…The main cause of variability that occurs in the process of beekeeping is the use of local ecotypes that are well adapted to the agricultural and ecological environment of a certain area (Jevtić et al, 2007). Certain specificities of relief, terrain exposure, and eco-climatic conditions in the territory of Serbia affect the heterogeneity and variability of the traits of the honey bee.…”
